The Creating Positive Change (CPC) program
...began in 1999 as the Community Prevention Collaborative, a coalition of community leaders who felt strongly about working together to reduce alarming trends (as reported in the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and other quantifiable assessment instruments) in ATOD substance use in the region, and identifying strategies to support prevention programs and secure treatment options. This coalition developed a framework for collaborative programming and applied for, and was awarded, a State Incentive Grant in 2000 to plan and develop prevention programming for the Region. A Board of Directors representing core coalition members was formed to provide governance, hiring a Program Director in August 2000 to lead the effort. In 2001, due to expanding program services, a Program Coordinator joined the team. The Collaborative Board of Directors voted late in 2003 to revise the name of the organization to "Creating Positive Change" to signal their proactive stance towards prevention programming.

In the fall of 2004, CPC was the recipient of a 5-year, $500,000, Drug Free Communities Support Program Grant from theDepartment of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The funds are being used to futher our work in the areas of media and community education; parent outreach; youth advocacy and coalition capacity building.

Over the past several years, CPC has made a significant impact on area prevention efforts by hosting Creating Lasting Family Connections (CLFC) trainings and classes, convening coalition meetings, developing and sustaining parent outreach initiatives; providing internships for high school students; developing and coordinating Prevention Page publication with The Monadnock Ledger; developing, and continuing to advise, youth groups at both ConVal and Conant High Schools; and assuming caretaker status of a historical building in Peterborough to house CPC operations and Club Cannon, a regional Teen Center.

All programs serve teens and families from the surrounding communities of Antrim, Bennington, Dublin, Francestown, Greenfield, Hancock, Jaffrey, Peterborough, Rindge, Sharon, and Temple.

A trained staff of four, including an Executive Director (PT), Associate Director (FT), Teen Center Coordinator (FT) and Teen Center Assistant (PT), provide expertise to meet the ever-increasing demand for information and outreach. Program outreach is provided in a variety of locations: in schools, at recreation department sites, in private homes, etc. The majority of outreach efforts area provided on-site at the CPC building.

The CPC acts as a resource for, and is a vital member of, a variety of networks and partnerships within the region and the State, including teaming with recreation departments, law enforcement, the judiciary system (Hillsborough and Jaffrey/Peterborough District Courts), human service and civic organizations (Chambers of Commerce, Monadnock United Way), medical professionals (Monadnock Community Hospital) and youth advocacy groups (SADD, SMAD, InterAct).
